Winter Road … Done our Deliveries!

As the temperature starts to rise, and the snow and ice are melting, the scenery is changing, as is the focus of the organization. All our winter customer deliveries are completed for the Tłı̨chǫ Investment Corporation! It has been an exciting winter, and we have done well to meet our expectations. Over 7,000 loads of fuel and freight moved, an excellent safety record, and plenty of successes. The construction and maintenance of the diamond mine road remained strong.

During this time, I have had many discussions with our team in Fort Saskatchewan, our drivers, contractors, customers … just about everyone involved with moving items from the supplier to the destination at the mines. We have a great number of lessons learned, and we are planning to implement to make WR 2019 a great success!

Closer to home … The Nishi Khon Forestry testing was completed in the communities over the past month, and this unit is ready to go in need of emergency. Our mobile assets are being categorized and are in preparation for the spring and summer maintenance schedule attainment, as well as utilization plans. You will see a great amount of work being done in the Nishi Khon yard this summer. The team is collaborating to improve our readiness, and ability to react to potential customer needs … short-term and long-term.

Meanwhile, I was able to make it out to Wekweètì. It was a spectacular drive across the winter road, and some of the nicest scenery I have ever seen. As with all the community winter roads, it was opened ahead of schedule! The drive was spectacular, as was the beautiful view of the sunrise from Snare Lake Lodge. The lake was amazing as were the foothills surrounding the community. It was also great to spend some time with Chief Charlie Football, and the community government. I am excited to go back in summer!

The progress on the Tłıc̨ hǫ All Season Road bidding has been ongoing. It has been a lot of preparation as we work with the three companies who have won the right to place the final bid. We have meetings within the community soon, to provide updates, as well start to recruit for potential positions, and apprenticeship programs. The three proponents are working hard to prepare their final proposals, which means we are also working hard to complete requests for information. It is exciting to think that the road to Whati will be accessible all year round … just a few years into the future. It will open so much more for the region.

Our internal initiatives which we planned to start after the winter road are well underway, and the team is working hard to improve our equipment, our people, and our results. We have a lot of work in front of us, as we close the fiscal year, and prepare for the gathering in early July. Many steps to take, yet they are all in the name of progress.

I am looking forward to the summer season, and the midnight sun! At TIC we have a lot of work in front of us this summer, in the communities, on the roads, in the office, and preparing for next winter … to make it the best season ever.

Winter Road … Lots of Traffic!

It has been an exciting winter for the Tłıc̨ hǫ Investment Corporation! As we speed through the last couple of weeks of the winter road season for delivery to the diamond mines, we are approaching 5,000 loads moving north from Yellowknife thus far. After the start of the season, and a road shutdown of six days for winter storms rolling through, the teams have done an excellent job of keeping things positive with our customers and deliveries. The ice has been very thick this year, so we were able to move to full loads quickly, and the storms did not hurt us too much.

Jasper and I were able to get out to see our customer Diavik at the mine site, visit the new A21 mine, and meet with members of our team and the Diavik management team and President as well! It was quite a site to see a mine at the very early stages, before it has gone too low, and the de-watering has just completed. I will be visiting our customers every quarter, and meeting with our teams as well. It is important we stay in front of the projects.

I was able to make a winter road trip to Gamèti to visit our hotel and retail store and allow me think strategically about what we need to do to help the community and improve our operations out there. It was a wonderful driving day, and the view from the hotel of the beautiful lake was amazing. Our staff in both locations is remarkable and was very happy to welcome us! They met with me to express their concerns about the facilities and how issues could be improved. We still have our major freight deliveries to the communities which will happen over the next two or three weeks, as soon as we are given the go-ahead to use the roads for heavy loads by the GNWT DOT! I’ll be going out toWekweètì soon … and I can’t wait!

The Tłıc̨ hǫ All-Season Road Project is going through the bidding process with the GNWT. Tlicho Road Construction are working with various companies as the

Tłıc̨ hǫ Investment Corporation will have be providing several types of resources.

The new road will begin construction in 2019 and is expected to generate some excellent opportunities for the

Tłıc̨ hǫ people, especially those living in Whatì!

We have started our Asset Maintenance and Utilization project for our light and heavy equipment through one of our engineering companies, Aboriginal Engineering Limited. This plan is intended to better utilize all our resources, throughout the year. It is a massive project in 2018, and it is just getting off the ground. We will be also starting a similar project with our land transportation companies Ventures West and Tlicho Land Trans.

The six-bay garage in Behchokǫ is to be completed in May. There are several new projects being discussed and assembled by Tlicho Construction.

Internally, we are working on training with the teams, to ensure everyone can use our systems more effectively. The process has started to find a Human Capital Management system led by the HR team in Yellowknife and Fort Saskatchewan. This is meant to assist in recruiting, managing, and retaining our

vast people resources. While we do this, we are reviewing and improving policies to make many matters more easily handled by the managers and team mates with consistency and fairness.

The management team is working to help us continuously improve as we move forward. We have identified many areas of need and intend to implement those changes during the spring and summer months to ensure an even smoother winter road season in 2019! You may see some new opportunities arise as well, as we continue to re-align and build for the future!

I look forward to continuing to provide you more updates as we progress through this year! As always … if you have any questions, my team and myself are there for you!

Winter is Coming? No Winter is Here!

As I have just finished my 30th business day as Chief Operating Officer

with the Tłıc̨ hǫ Investment Corporation, I thought it was a great time to start writing a monthly blog to let everyone know what we are doing here at TIC.

In December, during my first few days, I was able to get out to visit Behchokǫ and I was treated very warmly by everyone I met. Seeing some of our facilities, including the Sportsplex, really got my juices flowing, and wanting to get more projects underway as soon as possible. I’ve already had meetings with the GNWT to discuss things like the road to Behchokǫ and the bridge near Frank Channel, and future projects in the region. It is great to know there are some exciting times ahead!

The winter road construction team have completed the winter road to Whatì and it is open! The Gamèti road about to open in a couple of days (two weeks ahead of schedule). That will allow the road to Wekweètì to get completed soon! I drove out to Whatì last week for my first visit. It was awesome! I met so many great people.

While there, I was able to visit the new Whatì Hotel, which will be opened for regular business shortly. I also spent time in our community store and had great conversations with the staff.

The teams working in both facilities have been doing a great job.

There are some improvements and adjustments that needs to be completed, though the fruit of their labour will be seen shortly. I was very impressed with the community and enjoyed my time there. I look forward to visiting Gamèti and Wekweètì.

I’ve been able to visit our offices in Fort Saskatchewan, AB to meet and observe the teams at Ventures West and Tlicho Land Trans. The transport of Fuel and Freight from Edmonton to Yellowknife has been completed, with record amounts being moved. Flow of trucks from Yellowknife to the mines started this week and accelerated quickly. We have hundreds of trucks on the roads already heading north, and the site is amazing, especially at night. Constant contact with customers to meet their needs is critical. A dispatch office filled with people is the norm for the next eight weeks, 24 hours per day!

We have been working diligently over the past few months to supply labour to new mining projects, and leasing equipment assets to keep them utilized. We are also preparing for new and exciting projects in the future. I have worked with and been observing the management team across all the businesses and have been building plans to re-align some of the business and take steps to improve and build the future of the Tłıc̨ hǫ Investment Corporation and Group of Companies. There are wonderful challenges and opportunities ahead of us!

Meeting many people inside and outside our businesses has been one of the most fun parts of my job thus far. Building our relationships with customers and partners is a goal for myself and the whole organization. The teams from all the businesses are working extremely hard to get through our busiest

time of the year, and as the days get longer (and colder) we continue to push freight to the mines. We have all been working hard spreading the TIC name and working toward growing the business.

My expectations for the Tłıc̨ hǫ Investment Corporation and businesses this year are very high. We have a lot to do, and the team is coming together to make it happen! I look forward to continuing to provide more information and sharing exciting opportunities as we move forward!
